emergency brake shoe

does anyone have any knowledge about the Chevy's rear emergency brake shoe replacement?

my truck is a 2000 1500 ext. cab 2wd.

there is a shoe (1pc, not 2) that is used under the inside of the rear disc that is now scraping and needs to be replaced.

so far, the only info dug up was by a well respected member (Ryanbab)and his book showed a 2 pc shoe that requires rear axle removal to replace.

however, this is not a 2 pc. (as convetional shoe and drum) but rather a 1 circular pc. that looks to be held in place by one retainer.

should be a no-brainer to remove and replace, but i'd like to get all the knowledge beforehand that i can.

the funny thing is, the emergency brakes have never been engaged, but somehow at 100K miles have managed to wear out and start scoring the inner drum, whilst the disc and pads are wearing beautifully.........the pads still have over half the material on them..............the truck is seeing mostly highway mileage.

thx

dealer item only 35.00 each

it has an adjuster on the top i think

a syou said not hard to c/o 1 bplt on bottom holding it on

but when you replace them make sure you turn the inner drum

if not the drum will be a pain to get back on (over those new shoes)

 thx for all the help guys........the operation went fast and easy.

the good news is that the axle does not need to be pulled as outlined in the manual.

I just took mine off and left them off. I put a wore tie on the cylender to hold them together.

most likely if these wear out quick i will do the same............funny thing is, the emergency brakes have never been effective even when the truck was new.

The Generals Bean counters with engineering degrees had to have come up with this concept of less moving parts for the Emergency brake will save money. Perhaps on paper it works.

In the real world its a piss poor design. too many failures with or with-out the redesigned retainer clip. Adjustment of the shoe to drum diameter is a pain in the butt that adds extra cost to the consumer due to added book time for a service tech. to perform the job properly (Stealerships must love it!) Plus this forces a vast majority to neglect proper service (see the above replys IE: removing the shoe and tie wraping the actuator OR In other threads: I don't use my e-brake any more) This brings up a good question

What should the real name be? Parking brake or Emergency brake ????????

This is the worst design of any 4 wheel disc vehicle I have owned (280z, Maxima, Jeep Grand Cheroke) . General Motors will not have a voluntary recall to completly change out the design. Even a Federal Government forced recall (If it ever happens) will only result in a shoe string fix like "new clips".

Will the General get smart and redesign on future models?

BTW: I Use my brake all the time, I had one encounter with a car parked on a hill with only the tranny in park. I had to get a buddy to back his car into my car to remove pressure off of the Pawl on the fly wheel to move the gear selector out of park. Only needed one lesson!

As I mentioned before, I have removed mine. I do hope however that I dont need it as an "emergency brake" someday. I live in tha flat lands of MD, near the bay and never use it for parking.

The reason I took mine off is simple, I could not get them to hold after trying over and over to adjust them. My next door neighbor's were not working either and he picked up some new ones and asked me to help him replace them. After we put new ones on (adjesting was a PITA) with new rotors as well (the existing rotor on the drivers side was wasted due to the parking brake shoe) they were great for about 2 days, then did not hold well at all.

After seeing the ware it caused to the rotor/drum on the drivers side I decided that too much maintenance would be needed to prevent this from happening on mine so off they came.
